The Company

Alipay launched in 2004 to help create trust between online buyers and sellers. Its parent company was formed in October 2014 as Ant Financial Services Group and was renamed Ant Group in July 2020. Ant expanded from payments into consumer and merchant finance, wealth and insurance distribution, and technology services.

Chinese authorities suspended Ant's dual-market IPO days before its planned November 2020 debut. The pre-pricing target was about $280 billion; the planned offering was reported at more than $310 billion at pricing. In July 2023, a proposed buyback implied $78.5 billion. That is the latest disclosed valuation marker identified here, not a current market price: Ant has not announced a more recent priced round or confirmed current valuation.

Alibaba accounts for its share of Ant's results one quarter in arrears, so reported profit figures require period labels. Reuters calculated RMB4.7 billion of profit for Ant's three months ended June 30, 2026, reported on August 20, 2026, up 1% year over year. This follows RMB4.74 billion for the three months ended March 31, 2025, reported in August 2025, which Reuters said was down 60.5% year over year.

Ant reported RMB35.03 billion of R&D investment in 2025, including AI-related work, after RMB23.45 billion in 2024. The 2024 amount is confirmed by Ant's 2024 Sustainability Report; the company said it was up 10.7% year over year.

Why It Matters

Ant remains a useful case study in how fintech scale, regulation, and technology investment interact in China. Its payments network and financial-services distribution matter to the economics of consumer credit and platform businesses, while the separation of Ant International, Ant Digital Technologies, and OceanBase creates distinct capital-raising and possible-listing paths that should not be conflated with an Ant Group IPO.
