Boom Supersonic
Boom designs a proposed supersonic airliner and the systems required to bring it to market.
The Company
Boom Supersonic is building Overture, a proposed Mach 1.7 commercial airliner, alongside the manufacturing and propulsion program needed to certify it. Its XB-1 demonstrator has provided a visible technology milestone, but Overture still faces the far harder work of commercial certification and industrial ramp.
The company disclosed a $100 million Series B in 2019 and says it has raised more than $700 million of investment and other capital. A $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion Series B-1 valuation has been reported by private-market data providers, rather than announced by Boom as a completed priced transaction.
Why It Matters
Boom is a useful test of whether private capital can finance a clean-sheet commercial aircraft program outside established aerospace primes. Its progress also matters for suppliers, airports and airlines considering a return of premium supersonic routes.
